The Governor's West Ocala Neighborhood Revitalization Council (GWONRC)

serves as the Seed Task Force for the Weed and Seed Initiative.  The Mission of the GWONRC is to work with all governmental agencies and community organizations in revitalizing the West Ocala neighborhood through enhancement in the areas of environment, economics and social amenities.  The Executive Board is comprised of thirteen members.  Several subcommittees were formed to increase services provided through the GWONRC.  They are Beautification, Housing, Enterprise Zone and Hampton Campus.

Strategies and actions to stimulate neighborhood redevelopment in West Ocala include:

  • Encourage local, state and federal agencies to work together strategically and cooperatively in responding to the needs expressed by community leaders.
  • Explore the availability of grants, from the private sector - foundations, corporate, etc., to gain more financial resources for use in assisting the rebirth of West Ocala.
  • Facilitate communication among and between City of Ocala agencies and other public and private efforts directed at rebuilding the community.
  • Evaluate the need for new laws and public funding to specific neighborhood initiatives such as job training, promotion and recognition of volunteerism, participatory governance, economic development, etc.
  • Expansion of existing partnerships.

The Goal of the GWONRC is to work with Ocala citizens in building and sustaining neighborhoods that are safe and healthy, economically vibrant, and whose residents view the future with hope and pride for themselves and with optimism for the next generation of citizens. During the past year the GWONRC met eleven times. The GWONRC serves as a clearinghouse for proposed activity in West Ocala neighborhoods and then makes recommendations to the City Council on matters of disbursement of Community Development Block Grant monies, zoning and land use issues, transit system routes, housing issues, environmental issues, infrastructure improvements, economic development, crime, fire protection and code enforcement.  The GWONRC assists City departments in planning and growth issues.  This has led to a better understanding of the needs of the residents and the workers charged with projects that effect the community.
