Who Is CCASA?

The Community Council Against Substance Abuse (CCASA), which is funded jointly by the City of Ocala, Marion County Board of County Commissioners, and the Marion County School Board, is comprised of representatives from the business community, religious leaders, government, non-profit organizations, rehabilitation centers, drug impacted communities, social service agencies, law enforcement, grass roots organizations, students, neighborhood groups, individuals and the United Way.

Created in 1990 in response to a rising problem of drugs and drug related crime, CCASA focuses on strengthening collaboration among the community, local, state and federal government, business sector, increasing citizen participation in the anti-drug effort, and enhancing coordination among all sectors and organizations that demonstrate a long term commitment to reducing substance abuse.

The Mayor's Blue Ribbon Task Force developed an action plan that was adopted and implemented by CCASA which has now become a model program for other communities.

Today, CCASA is an active board comprised of 35 members with over 250 volunteers that represent a cross section of the community.  CCASA serves as a link between various community groups and county leaders and provides a clearinghouse and resource for relevant agencies and interested residents.

It focuses on reducing the supply and availability of alcohol and other drugs through increased law enforcement, changes in social attitudes to reduce demand for drugs, and increasing opportunities for drug treatment.
